- It’s an amazing series, but it frequently refers to women as the fairer sex and stuff. It’s just like old-timey sexism.
- There’s a lot of sexism in older stuff but that was over my lines even before we all became more conscious of it.
- Honestly the casual sexism is really off putting, i know it was the mid-to-late 90s but they were depicting a supposedly enlightened futuristic society, envisioning it as even mildly sexist, or sexism as being pervasive, is just a failure of imagination.
- I loved it at the time. The sexism hasn’t aged well, to put it mildly. But otherwise it’s stll worth a look.
- Fwiw the sexism is a deliberate addition to the setting, as part of the running "humans are monsters too" commentary. But very understandable if that turns people off.
- Yes! giving a standing ovation to your point over here. I had this discussion with someone over the tv show mad men. They were horrified i watched it - "it's so sexist!". No, it depicts sexism, that's very different. "no it's not" etc. Argh!
- Someone on letterboxd called the sexism jill experiences in the stone tape “problematic” lol. One day people will understand that depiction does not equal endorsement….
- When someone says 'thing sexist,' they don't mean 'thing contains depictions of sexism.' they mean 'sexists have limited categories for women - stupid/weak/sex objects/crazy b*tches - and thing's female characters are all in those categories.' it means 'the women are badly written.' 2/.
- Yeah sexism has always been and issue in the fandoms because its been an issue in society.
- Wait maybe im actually thinking of sexism…have all those times on my mind when i go on the internet and im very confused to discover hate campaigns happening against characters like dr pulaski, peggy hill, pearl steven universe. Never see this kind of vitriol against male characters who are flawed.
- No, no, you just don’t understand. Every single powerful female character is a mary sue while every single powerful male character is a unique and special little boy to praise, no gary sues here. As someone who loves analyzing media, this is a trope that will never die. Sexism is just rampant.
- Movie bros are very not chill about this selection. Kind of thinking sexism is strongly correlated with fandom, but what do i know?
- I'm not sure whether casual sexism or faux feminism is worse. Every strong character is male? boring. Problematic. *talking* about how strong your female character(s) are but still making all of the strongest characters men? feels even grosser to me.
- Is it sexism if it isn’t even the characters? internalized sexism? i have issues with the very premise of the story. Looking forward to y’all’s take.
- The entertainment industry teaches us that men are more important than women. E.g. 80% of lines on screen are from males. We’re taught to be sexist. It’s drilled into *all* of us, including women, every day. Until we address that, sexism will continue to thrive.
- I think there was a large amount of sexism too. That can also apply to women, women aren't immune to buying into sexist stereotypes of what women can and can't do. In fact, i find that sexist attitudes are very prevalent among women.
