- Holy shit theres a zillion people that just dont know how to fucking read because theyre being taught incorrectly!
- I read a long-form apm piece on something called three-cueing and am coming to terms with the possibility that about 40 of people who went through elementary school in the us since the mid-eighties cannot fucking read.
- The specific thing jeong was calling out is that millions of people have been taught to read by guessing which word makes sense in context rather than looking at the letters to see the actual word. Its terrifying!
- 52 of american adults cannot read or write above a 6th grade level. Educating people shouldnt be a partisan issue.
- It is tiresome to deal with people who do not acknowledge that words have meanings.
- People will just regurgitate any old string of words like it means something, when it doesnt. Not unlike llms i guess.
- I think its similar to my gripe with people saying unalived for killed or died like if you are in a scenario where you must use innuendo or euphemism there are others that exist which sound less childish.
- I know people saying words they dont know the meaning to is an old problem, but with how common the misuse of all these fan speak and literary terms are have had disastrous consequences on how art and media are perceived.
- My experiences with written communication with people has been fraught with the most insane misunderstandings. Its so obvious that they have come up with a meaning entirely different from what i wrote, responding as if i had said things i had not.
- God this explains so much of why i feel like so many young people on social media simply do not understand the meaning of words or how to analyze a post. They just latch onto key words and hop around, then vibe a bit and shit out a response.
- The vast majority of discourse is people either unintentionally or intentionally not specifying their terms and other people assuming those terms can only mean exactly one thing, and then both those groups talking past each other until blood is spilled.
- Social media seems to encourage people to jump to conclusions and reject even slight nuance, unfortunately.
