- What even is ya literature? what makes it so distinct from adult fiction? i mean, aside from the obvious lack of explicit sex and whatnot. It being "age appropriate" is not what i'm confused by, it's the fact that a lot of people seem to treat this broad thing as a _genre_ instead of a […].
- This is great. "explain everything" is a signature difference between ya fiction and mature fiction in any genre.
- I literally just learned this. The term ya fiction always bothered me because everyone says minors aren't adults but then gives minors books for "young adults" but "young adults" also means something completely different that excludes minors. Make up your mind!!
- My point being that "young adult" isn't actually aimed at young adults. It's aimed at high schoolers. Anything younger is rated "middle grade" fiction. R-rated movies are more young adult than young adult-rated novels are.
- My hot book take is if you only read ya fiction as an adult and even as a young adult or teen you're denying yourself so many experiences in engaging with the written word. It's safe, it's comfortable, and it's easy to pander to audiences with.
- For me i think it's just the most egregious version of "it's fine for adults to ready ya fiction." you are a grown person, have some self-respect and read a real goddamn book!
- You wanna know why so many adults are reading and enjoying ya fiction now? because we're too damn bitter and cynical in today's world to believe that anything that has adult main characters could be hopeful. So, yeah, ya and fantasy are gonna see spikes in popularity.
- Ya fiction is the most fascinating category to me. They seem to deal with the human condition, with more clarity and nuance than some of the adult novels in the same categories. Maybe because older readers just want to escape the real world while younger readers want to understand it.
- I give zero fucks about ya fiction because i even as a young kid i never read any. I was reading adult fiction basically as soon as i could read. I can't imagine reading it as an adult.
- I think part of it is age. I don't recall ya fiction being a thing once we hit our teens. 12-13-14 is when you started grabbing clan of the cave bear or the mists of avalon or the winds of war or some tom clancy shit off your mom and dad's bookshelf. There was a flavor, but it wasn't specifically ya.
- The lack of ya fiction when we were young and outgrowing children's books. I think we ended up reading all sorts of things we weren't ready for.
- I remember being 15 or so and realizing that nothing was stopping me from browsing the adult fiction sections of the library. I devoured the sci-fi shelves after that. I genuinely don’t understand people who refuse to branch out. Read new things! your tastes were not finalized in middle school!
- Yeah, it's not for me but ya fiction (and slam poetry for that matter) certainly have a place if it makes people happy and teaches them valuable lessons. Big "let people enjoy things" person. But i do agree with liam that that heavy didacticism seems to be seeping into other things, in annoying ways.
- I am so goddamn sick how much sci-fi, fantasy, and other genre fiction is almost exclusively about teenagers. I have been since i was in the target demographic. The permanent adolescent mindset isn't inherent to those spaces, it's just a convention we've accepted because it's easy to pitch and sell.
- My big problem with ya fiction is it's all stories of weird kids being weird and the world changing itself to celebrate and fit their weirdness, instead of genuinely useful advice like how to pretend to be normal so the idiots at school leave you alone.
- The large majority of ya fiction is written by authors who aren't talented enough to just write fiction. They have to rely on a readership whose emotional valence and main character syndrome will replace their lack of storytelling and world building.
- A fact i don’t quite know what to make of is that most people who buy and read young adult fiction are just adult adults. And the publishers absolutely know that these are their main customers.
- 4. Ya fiction currently has a problem where the real target audience is adults who still read ya, but also there is a place for stories that give teens the fantasy of being adults with jobs and responsibilities. It's a hard needle to thread!
- My impression is that ya is so much more salable that lots of speculative fiction (sci-fi/fantasy/horror/etc) titles are being sold as ya instead of as "adult". I.e. What's left in "adult" is the stuff least amenable to being squeezed into the ya category.
- All these people who started reading big heavy advanced literature when still under the age of 10 just blow me away. I was in my late teens before i could even attempt tolkien, and in my 20s before i could attempt anything like 'serious' literature. Probably explains my inability to write fiction.
